Matheran: the land of monkeys.

Located amidst the Sahyadri range on the western that Matheran is a small hill station that is just about 100 km away from Mumbai. This hill station is very famous for small weekend getaway and to experience a fun time away from all the city hassle. Matheran, when translated into another language, is ”overhead forest”. Mathern is the smallest hill station in all of India but still, it is really very popular. Also, Matheran is very clean and pollution-free because it is one of the rare places that doesn’t allow any vehicles inside. One can go to various points and enjoy various breathtaking views and enjoy chai, pakodas and Maggi there with their friends and family. Other than that people can go to the various mandirs there and worship. It has 36 points from where you can watch the picturesque and breathtaking views of the Sahyadri mountains.

Places one can visit in Matheran-

1]Monkey Point-

Monkey point is really a must-visit place here. One can really experience the flora and fauna of this place. This place is really famous for its monkeys and it’s different breeds one can find them doing peculiar activities and can laugh at them too. Well one disclaimer though doing go around with food or the monkeys might just steel it all . This unique destination overlooks a beautiful scenery of the Western Ghats and its intimidating mountains and deep gorges. One can watch beautiful sunsets and can just shout and listen to their echoes.

2]Louisa point-

One can enjoy a wonderful view from here. From this point the whole city is visible it’s a really beautiful view. Other than that there are remains of the prabal and vishalgad fort. One should definitely visit this place. The lions head is another tourist attraction nearby.

3]Charlotte Lake-

It is said that if you go to Matheran and you don’t visit this place your trip is incomplete because this lake is literally the heart and soul of Matheran. This lake is just walking distance from the main market. And is a real delight for all the travellers who love to sit near beautiful scenes and just enjoy the peace out there. Other than that this place is a picnic spot for certain families too.

4]Ambarnath Temple-

On this beautiful small hill station there is the amazing temple of Ambarnath. Which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is said that this temple was build in 1060. The festival of mahashivratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm here. And it is said that it resembles the Dilwara temple which is located in mount Abu.


Matheran is not popular for anything specific in general but one can find some really good items at a bargain here. Authentic chikkis can be found here. Chilli is basically sweet made of nutritious ingredients like jaggery, gram flour, etc. Nariman Chikki Mart is considered to be the most popular to buy these. Other than that one can find leather goods like belts, bags, shoes, etc. One can also buy a wide variety of cane items . The artisans of this hill station are popular for creating some of the most attractive and uniquely-designed cane items. Other than that dried wildflowers, Kolhapuri chappal, pure honey, etc can be found here.

6]Echo Point-

As the name suggests echo point is place where whatever you shout can echo. One can sit here and look at the deep ghats and wonderful views like the sahyadri range which is covered with a blanket of greenery. Other than that it is a lovely place for all the foodies. They can enjoy warm pakodas, different types of Maggies, fresh tea, delicious local Maharashtrian delicacies, etc .

7]Prabalgad fort-

Prabalgad Fort, also known as Kalavantin Durg is situated between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra, at a height of 2,300 feet in the Western Ghats. This fort is really a tourist attraction because it is built at the rocky plateaus of Matheran. One can thoroughly enjoy the fort if he hikes up to it because that’s the real fun. This fort is definitely a place every adventure junkie should go to .

Why is Matheran the land of monkeys ?
Matheran is one of the least populated hill stations in India because it doesn’t allow any kind of vehicles there. Therefore it is home to a lot of monkeys. One can find a dozen of monkeys here of different species. And they are almost everywhere. And well we all know how disastrous monkeys are. Sometimes people even avoid removing or eating food in open spaces because of the monkeys.

Other than that Matheran has a lot to offer it is a getaway place for Mumbaikars as well as for the people who live in the neighbouring cities. It is filled with breathtaking views , temples , points , etc It is definitely a place for all peace lovers.
