A 4 Day Itinerary for Exploring Shimla

Shimla is a hill station in India to combine the beauty of the high Himalayas, the energy of a city and the sleepy charms of a hill station. Here are four days itinerary for Shimla so that we can explore its beauty to the hilt.


One of the best ways to know Shimla is to walk. We can start our day will Mall Road, which one of the longest of open-air, pedestrian, eating, strolling, and shopping promenades in the world. The Christ Church, with its imposing structure, stands all on the Mall Road and next to it is the charming building of the State Library. Another site which is worth visiting is the Dorje Drag Monastery, replete with Tibetan prayer flags, chants of the monks and prayer wheels.

The Ridge-to-Viceregal Lodge bit of the Mall forms the core of the notified ‘Heritage Zone’ of Shimla. The horse rides and ice-cream vendors attract the children and the bars and restaurants attract the adults. We must start early so that we can cover at-transactions like Telegraph building, Catholic Church, State Bank of India building and other heritage buildings on the Ridge Road. Also, we can’t miss the Wake and Bake Cafe, it is one of the best travel cafes in India.


Day 2 – a joy ride on the toy train

The Kalka-Shimla toy train is very famous and gives unforgettable train experience. We must start early and head straight to the Shimla railway station for booking a ticket on the toy train or we can do it online. If we don’t have a prior booking, we must reach the station before 10 in the morning as the first train departs at 10:30 am from Kalka. The journey is almost a day’s affair and we will not be back before 4:00 pm.

After this, we can either choose to walk from the station or take a cab until the lift area of the main market. Here we can explore the areas of Shimla including the famous Lakkar Bazaar where we must look for excellent wooden items. The shopping area is between Combermere Bridge and the Telegraph office.

Day 3 – a trip to Kufri and Chail

Shimla has fun and beautiful getaways like Kufri and Chail which can be easily visited in a day. Regular HPTDC buses ply from Shimla for these places. We can get our booking done from the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Office located at the Mall Road. It takes about one hour from Shimla to Kufri. The place a lot of offerings to choose from like skiing, trekking, tobogganing, camping, rock climbing, horse rides and peaceful walks.

The next stop is Chail but there is nothing much to do here except visiting the Chail Palace where we can take a walk around the sprawling campus and enjoy the lavish menu at the in-house restaurant and click some amazing pictures.


Day 4 – Jakhoo Hill and Heritage Walks

Jakhoo is the tallest of Shimla’s Hills and towers over the Ridge. It is crowned by the famous Jakhoo Hanuman Temple and an extravagantly gigantic statue of God. There are viewpoints and benches looking over the enchanting sunrises and sunsets. We can climb up the hills from a lane from Christ Church or we can drive up the other side of the hill from Sanjauli.

Shimla is a walker’s paradise and there are many interesting walking trails which are worth taking up. We must opt for the Heritage Walking Tour in Shimla. It is one of the famous walking tours of India, to get the best of this pretty hill station.
